Death Note: Another Note by NISIOISIN
Death: A Life by George Pendle
Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman

This is book #3 for 2009.

I loved this book. I think for a big reason that I loved Watchmen. The superheroes and villains in this book are unique in the fact that the author made them up and gave them life. It isn't like reading a Superman story, where the characters have been around in one form or another for 70 years. You don't have this pre-set opinion about the chracters, which made this great.

It is a very fun book to read, and learn about the characters histories. It is written from the points of views of two characters, a hero and a villain. You really get insite to their strengths and flaws. It is a well rounded story. Anyone that likes superheroes will probably like this book.

Death Note: Another Note by NISIOISIN
Death: A Life by George Pendle

I picked this book up first because of the cover, and bought it when reading that it will cover the "Jesus incident" and Death being mistreated by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

I liked this book. It was a really easy read and pretty entertaining. There is a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor. Super right-wing religious fanatics would hate this book because of the way God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost characters are written. Whatever, I thought it was funny and they can stuff it.

The book is written as Death's memoirs. From his birth in Hell, the 250 pages cover everything from pre-time to creation to World War II. Good fun.

So my buddy Ed keeps track of his yearly book reading on his blog, so I thought I'd follow suit this year. I set a goal of 18 books this year (I am a slow reader). So here is where I am at this year:

Death Note: Another Note by NISIOISIN

My roommate got this for me for Christmas. I read the whole 12 volume manga series of Death Note last year and loved it. This is a prequel novel that ties together something mentioned early in the series (volume 2 I think). It was a very fast read, and good if you are familiar with the whole manga series. It references characters that you don't meet until later in the series, so one that hasn't read the series could become confused. There appears to be a couple other story offshoots that could come from this novel (a 2nd and 3rd prequel to the series). I hope they go through with it, because I love the Death Note world.

This is what I saw on day 2 of Bumbershoot. It was my least busy day...

Stone Temple Pilots

These gusy were just as bad ass as the last time I saw them. I was stoked for the show, and once they finally come on it was awesome! They came on 30 minutes late, and I was telling myself that if they got to 45 minutes late that I was leaving, because Weiland was back stage over dosing or something. Luckily they came on and kicked ass!

The Human Giant & Friends

Apparently these guys have a show on MTV. I haven't had cable in 8 years, so I didn't know that. But I caught their show anyways. They were funny, not as good as Blood Squad the night before in my opinion. But still a good way to pass some time. They did make a joke about people in wheelchairs, saying they are the laziest people on Earth. Which was made even funnier because I am sure they didn't know there was a lady in a wheelchair in the audience. Wonder if they would have cut that joke out if they knew.

The Weakerthans

I had only heard a song or two from these guys. Ronni really likes them so I heard a couple on her Zune. They were good. I liked them live. Ummm...I think they are Canadian? yeah. ok. That is about all I know.

James and I saw Ronny Turiaf when we were waiting for the bus downtown after watching the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe back in 2005. We were standing there talking about the chronic...WHAT? of Narnia and this huge guy in a light blue track outfit comes walking by with some woman. I recongized this, James didn't I don't think. That is about it for the story... but man, he sure was tall.

On a side note, Turiaf signed a 4-year, $17 million contract with Golden State this summer. Not bad for someone who had a "career" year averaging 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game last year!

I saw Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready at Bumbershoot yesterday. I almost peed on myself. I was walking through a crowd of people that had gathered to watch these guys play the drums, and he walked right by me eating something. I stopped, and thought "I should go talk to him." So I turned back around to find him. (stalker). I found him talking to some lady. I was close enough to hear that they were making plans to meet somewhere to watch a show or something. I froze and he walked right by me again. I didn't even know what to say to him. Judging by the way I spoke when I met Jeff Ament, it was probably better that I didn't speak at all.

What is the next "big step" in your life?

My next big step in life is not getting arrested for dry humping Jessica Alba's leg. I just can't let that happen...again.

Here is what I saw on day 1 of Bumbershoot:

Beck

Saw Beck on the Mainstage in Memorial Stadium as the last show of the night. I was pretty excited for Beck until the drunk ass frat guy sitting down the row from my started puking all over the place. Fucking asshole. The sound wasn't that good, so I just walked around from area to area trying to find where would sound the best and have the best view. I left early, with like 40 minutes or so left in the set. I was tired, it had been a long day, and I wanted to get out of there and beat the mad rush to leave.

Band of Horses

I had never heard Band of Horses before. I thought they were pretty OK. The lead singer kept saying "WOOO!!" into the microphone after every single song, which was noticably annoying. One of the other band members did it too near the end of the set, and I think it might have woke the singer up, because for the last 2 songs then he didn't do it.

Blood Squad

Blood Squad is an improv comedy troup that takes suggestions on a slasher movie title (one that hasn't been made) and does a whole movie from just the title. It was absolutely hilarious. I would definitely go see these guys again.

Asylum Street Spankers

This is a band from Austin, TX that I have seen a few times. I couldn't resist going to see them again. It was a kid's show too. The adult show was later, but I was busy for that. They are pretty inventive with their music, got to see a washboard being played, a saw being played (what a haunting sound that came out of that!), and got to see the drummer pound on the strings of the upright bass. Neat! I got the band's autographs afterwards.

Vicci Martinez

I first heard of Vicci Martinez from the lead singer of The Bradbury Press, Darren. I met him at a bar before a show a number of years ago, and he told me about Vicci Martinez. This was the first time I saw her. I loved her. Great voice and some catchy tunes. She was awesome. You should check her out.
